Why Toxic Free

Most of the information on NonscentedToxicFree is available through reasearch, but, it is also a time consuming and complex process. We have done that for you. We have searched websites that advertise toxic free products; yet when we looked at the ingredients, many of their products contained a range of toxins including parabens, sodium laurel sulphate, propylene glycol, isopropanol, butane, sodium PCA and many others that are included in the list below. In addition, other people are allergic to scented and fragranced products. Often products are advertised as unscented or fragrance-free, but in reality, contain masking fragrances.

Chemicals are everywhere and many are unsafe. You need to educate yourself about chemicals that can harm you and avoid products that contain them. You should always read labels.

We searched for lists of products that contained toxic chemicals; ascertained the toxins that are in our common personal and household products; and discovered the harm caused by the use of these toxins. We scrutinized products until we found those that meet our own standards and are available on our website. We are continually searching the world for other toxic free products that we can offer to our customers.

Our world today is bombarded with hundreds, if not thousands, of toxic chemicals from industrial pollutants to the very products we use every day including soaps, creams, lotions, toothpaste, colognes, laundry, and household cleaning products. We live in a toxic world, and what we do about it individually will either help or harm it in the future. Children today suffer from chronic conditions as never before, including asthma, allergies, ear infections, ADD, ADHD and behavior problems. Also growing in frequency are conditions such as chronic fatigue, food and chemical sensitivities, yeast infections, and ‘sick building syndrome’. Five to ten percent of American couples are infertile, and nearly half of all pregnancies end in miscarriage. Three to five percent of babies are born with birth defects. Scientists cannot fully understand these increases, but early life exposure to environmental  pollutants is a leading suspect.

The chemicals in household products are "invisible bullets" that are being exposed to the most vulnerable of all, our children. Parents need to know about pesticides in the food we eat, lead-based paint, mercury in some fish, toxins in household cleaners, and know what steps to take to reduce children's exposure. It is alarming that so many people are simply unaware of these hazards. USA Today has reported the following statistics:
. The cause of 60% of birth defects is unknown- only 5% are known to be genetic.
. Childhood cancer rates have increased 10.8% in the past decade.
. In children age 1-14, cancer causes more deaths than any other illness.
. Approximately 10 million children in the US under the age of 12 live within four miles (6 km.) of a toxic waste dump (Environmental Protection Agency).
. Asthma rates in children have been an amazing 600% increase since 1980.

. Over one million children annually will suffer permanent damage from lead exposure.

Indoor air has 3 to 70 times more pollution than outdoor air according to a study conducted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Another study by the EPA stated that toxic chemicals in household cleaners are three times more likely to cause cancer than outdoor air. Mothers, the elderly, and infants spend 90% of their time in the home. A 15-year study by the National Cancer Association concluded that stay-at-home women are at a 54% higher risk of developing cancer than those who work outside the home. The number one killer of women aged 35-54 is breast cancer and the primary suspects are household cleaners, laundry detergents and pesticides.
Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's) such as xylene, ketones, and aldehydes are found in many aerosol products and air fresheners. The Washington Toxics Coalition reported that researchers found that babies under six months in homes that used air fresheners on most days had 30% more ear infections than those exposed less than once a week.

Flouride, used in toothpastes, is a toxic industrial waste, but, has long been touted as beneficial by the dental industry. International studies have revealed that flouride is linked with cancer, hip fractures, premature skin wrinkling, arthritis, as well as other diseases. Twenty-one European countries as well as Hawaii and Japan have either banned or discontinued its use. In British Columbia, Canada, Health Action Network Society has urged its members to stop using flouride in any form.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology more than 5000 different fragrances are used in perfumes and skin care products. A report (1986) by the National Academy of Sciences states that 95% of chemicals used in fragrances are synthetic compounds derived from petroleum which include benzene derivatives, aldehydes and other known toxins and sensitizers. Fragrances have increasingly been known to trigger asthma, allergies, and migraine headaches. Up to 72% of people with asthma report their attacks have been triggered by fragrance.

No one is immune from toxic chemicals including the unborn. In a study by The Environmental Working Group, (July 15, 2005), researchers at two major laboratories found an average of 200 industrial chemicals and pollutants in umbilical cord blood from ten babies born in August and September of 2004 at U.S. hospitals. Tests revealed a total of 287 chemicals in the group. The umbilical cord blood of these 10 children, collected by Red Cross after the cord was cut, harbored pesticides, consumer product ingredients, and wastes from burning coal, gasoline, and garbage. Of the 287 chemicals detected in umbilical cord blood, researchers know that 180 cause cancer in humans or animals, 217 are toxic to the brain and nervous system, and 208 cause birth defects or abnormal development in animal tests.

Many illnesses are preventable and can be linked directly to our daily consumption of chemicals in personal care products as well as in the food we eat, the water we drink, cleaning products used in the home and workplace, and in the environment. Research dealing with the prolonged effects of low-level chemical exposure may not be known for decades, but for many among us, that may be too late. We need to take a responsible, healthy approach that avoids the use of toxins as much as possible.

In spite of these problems, far too many health care professionals deny that they even exist. Rather than search for the root cause of the problem, patients are being prescribed medications to allay their symptoms, often making their situations worse. When modern medical technology can’t find an answer, you are usually told “It’s something you’ll have to live with” or you are referred to a psychologist or psychiatrist.

What we really need to do is become our own doctor and researcher. Everyone needs to become educated about toxic chemicals. We should read labels on everything we purchase, and know which ingredients are toxins and the damage that can be caused from exposure to them. We must not leave this decision to the so-called experts. The cosmetics industry, for example, is protected by their “trade secrets" and therefore is not obliged to list the many ingredients on their labels. Recall the famous quote, "Secrecy is the badge of fraud." by Sir John Chadwick, a British judge.

Air fresheners, laundry detergents and dryer sheets, oven cleaners, carpet cleaners and deodorants, paint removers, paint, and styrofoam are among the most toxic products with which we come into contact. A 1985 EPA report concluded that toxic chemicals in these products commonly used in the home are three times more likely to cause cancer than outdoor air pollution. The Consumer Product Safety Commission reported that “150 common household chemicals have been linked to allergies, birth defects, cancer, and psychological abnormalities.

Antifreeze, formaldehyde, acetone, sodium lauryl sulfate and other ingredients found in personal care products have been linked to numerous health problems such as chronic fatigue syndrome, cancer, kidney damage, immune system disorders, birth defects and more.

Pthalates which are added to soaps, perfumes, and shampoos to make them soft and fragrant, migrate into the bloodstream causing adverse reproductive effects in animals. There is good reason to believe it will do the same in humans.  (A study by the Center For Disease Control) (CDC)

We need to take a responsible healthy approach that avoids the use of toxins as much as possible. We must ask questions, listen, read, research, and not take “no” for an answer. Listen to yourself. If, for example, you cough every time you apply hairspray, doesn’t that tell you something? We need to take ownership of our health by making intelligent choices before we become too sick to make changes, eliminate the underlying causes of many health problems, and make a difference in our world, no matter how small.

Deadly Ingredients And Why
Polyethylene Glycol (PEG): Found in hair and skin care, make-up, deodorants, aftershave and baby care as well as sunscreens. A manufacturing by-product is a dangerous level of dioxin. It is implicated in contact dermatitis, kidney damage, liver abnormalities and can damage membranes causing rashes, dry skin and surface damage.
Propylene and Butylene Glycol: Petrolum plastics, and found in stick deodorants. they easily penetrate the skin and may cause brain, kidney and liver abnormalities.
Sodium Laurel Sulphate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES): Found in 90% of personal care products that foam such as shampoo, conditioners, toothpastes, and body washes. When combined with other chemicals they can be transformed into nitrosamines, a potent class of carcinogens. They may damage the immune
system, cause eye irritation and permanent damage to the eyes, especially in children.
Triclosan: Found in antibacterial cleansers, toothpastes and household products. A hormone disruptor, a registered pesticide similar to Agent Orange, it is a risk to human health and the environment.
FD & C Colour Pigments: Made from coal tar. They deposit toxins onto skin, causing sensitivity and irritation. May cause depletion of oxygen, and likely carcinogenic.
Phthalates: Hormone disruptors that are not commonly listed on products. Found in nail polish, perfume, hair spray, skin care, as well as personal care and household products. It can cause liver and kidney damage, birth defects, decreased sperm counts, early puberty and early breast development in boys and girls.
Talc: Found in body powder, baby powders, face powders, as well as condoms. It is a known carcinogen and is a major cause of ovarian cancer when used in the genital area. It can cause respiratory disorders if it gets inhaled into the lungs.
Fragrances: May be made of over 4000 ingredients each, many toxic or carcinogenic. Symptoms include headaches, skin discolorations, rashes, nausea, coughing, vomiting and skin irritation.
Fluoride: "Is linked to 10,000 cancer deaths yearly. Fluoridation is also responsible for 40 million cases of arthritis, dental deformity in 8 million children and allergic reactions in 2 million people." -Dr. Dean Burke and Dr. John Yiamouyiannis, National Cancer Institute, USA, 1997 Fluoride is linked to fluorosis in children, acne, alzheimer's, kidney damage, gastrointestinal problems, genetic damage, neurological impairment and bone decay.
Alcohol, Isopropyl (SD-40): Found in fragrances, aftershaves, hair colour rinses, hand lotions, and body rubs. It is a poisonous solvent and alters the structure of other chemicals. It strips the natural immune barrier, dries hair and skin, encourages bacterial growth and may cause headaches, flushing, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, depression, and coma. Mouthwashes that have an alcohol content of 25% or more have been implicated in mouth, tongue and throat cancer.
DMDM Hydantoin and Urea (Imidazolidinyl): Found in skin, body and hair care products, antiperspirants, and nail polish. They release formaldehyde, which may cause joint pain, skin reactions, allergies, depression, headaches, chest pain, ear infection, chronic fatigue, dizziness, heart palpitations, asthma, and insomnia.
